18 Days of Reflection in April

4/18/2025

0 Comments

I was meant to do NaPoWriMo -- 30 days, 30 poems.... but my first one lead me down a different path... and now I'm a bit bored of the project, so, 18 days is pretty good!

(This is where I parked the whole story... I will add in the images... or not because I will forget...

The story… (this is a reflection of yesterday years; I’m in a good place now - mostly!)…

There’s can be disdain for those who proclaim, “I’m a little adhd or autistic” all cute & chirpy like it’s a trend; like it’s cool…  But what if it’s blissful ignorance? What if it’s denial?… What if you’ve just leaned into quirky & weird? But what if you made it cute? What if you partied, drank & took drugs — not only as a way not to feel anything real — but so that others had a reason to think that you’re “oh, my gosh, you’re like, so fu-u-un! I looove you!”? And you have no confidence or love for yourself or have never even had these things modelled for you in life? And then… what if you make terrible & dangerous life decisions because it’s easier than sorting the shite out that you didn’t even know needed sorting out? And what if this version of you is accepted because you’re shiny & sparkly & fun… and when you’re shiny & sparkly & fun… it makes sense because everyone is in a state of sparkle, shine & fun… all night long!? What if in that moment, in that state of no mind, they were your ride or dies? Your gang? They became Your family. But in order not to die or majorly ruin your life, like many you know…you had to choose to stay away? Choose life. What if somehow you miraculously make it through all of that and you somehow motivate yourself to do better? And you found a better person to be better with? And have cats with & to generally mosey along with? And what if, in your job as a teacher, you fill out ADHD assessment forms for 5 year olds & you think “wow - that is so me”? But you don’t really know because it’s also not you all the time… because you developed strategies and you created a very convincing mask? But what if, by all accounts, you are a very gifted kindergarten & special education teacher, because the aforementioned quirkiness made it so… a chameleon amongst 5 year olds! Hmmm 🤔?! And then what if you see a video one day on Facebook (or several hours worth of videos because you are easily led down rabbit holes…) and you kinda think that maybe there are others who are like you? And maybe there is an explanation for the way you’ve always felt like you were a little different? An odd duck? And you realize that maybe you’re not just a little adhd - but in actuality you are so many of the things in all the memes & reels, but not quite all of the things? And you’re still a lot confused? And you find a friend and another friend who is kinda thinking the same thing? And you talk but it’s like toothpaste - once you squeeze a bit out you can’t put it back in? And now Facebook has your algorithm set to showing more of the things? And you worry it’s another hyper-fixation? It’s… Wait? What was my point? I think I was going to apologize to anyone I’ve ever offended by being trite about my possible adhd symptoms… “for being just a little ADHD.” PS. I DO get distracted by squirrels & shiny things… but it can get very exhausting… It’s a lot to maintain & I’m okay a lot of the time… Because ART & music & poetry & pals & my Misters 💕 And it turns out, I am really shiny & sparkly & weird & fun AND that shite is real 💗

NAPOWRIMO2020 - Poem 18

4/27/2020

An Ode to Life’s Small Treasures;
Grandiose Unrealized Pleasures

6:30 am, the arse crack of dawn,
a time for the devil’s spawn,
or so I had thought...
I never knew such beautiful skies! I kid you not!

Opulent pearly pink, incandescent sky,
sultry shades of sorbet sashay.
Bloomy roars, reverberating cheery encouragements.
Optimistic rosy glow, vibrantly voicing hope,
radiating a golden orb of fiery faith in rocky times,
peeking out from the sinister buzzkill clouds;
Glorious red and yellow blazing, entwining flames of citrus
in sky mirrors, topsy turvy glassy reflections make me tipsy.

NaPoWriMo2020 Day 5 Prompt - Twenty Little Poetry Projects

4/18/2020

Reflection & Aha... I used to worry about posting a poem every day, which was silly. I work on poetry every day during May, nay April (but the rhyme...), which is why there is NAPOWRIMO. I realize that mass posting every day brings an increased awareness to Poetry. But, we can only do what we can do, and it may seem obvious to some, but once I gave myself permission to go at my own pace, I may actually finish a NAPOWRIMO...It won’t be 30 poems in 30 days, but it will be 30 poems, based on 30 days of NAPOWRIMO Prompts (or not, ‘cause Poetic License) spread over several months.

I love this prompt and have been trying to make a poem, but it’s been a work in progress.... and I remembered that I have done a poem with this Prompt... As an occasional teacher, Aka. The Sub, this was an assignment the teacher had left for her grade 8 class. So cool! So, we all settled to poetry writing (they were really good kids at a really great school)....

Believe In Youth

i believe in You --
teaching in the world today takes everything we got
it causes so many worries. I wish we weren’t so fraught

slammed in the press for trying to do our best
taking away money, packing the classrooms like sardines
and it seems that no one is learning a thing

AXE fumes and obnoxious attitude ooze
i’m assaulted by curses coming at me, a mere messenger of knowledge --
and, I’d like to think — a harbinger of delight
i try with all my might
it used to be that eyeballs stared at me, they couldn’t wait to see
now, they get all glazey as they peel them from their screens
farther away and harder to reach
thumbs thump and slide, it’s one bumpy ride
machines rule the room, and I must be on a screen
to make my lessons boom
OMG it’s dizzy-making to think of all the changes
Life’s a test, full of stress,
but you’ll burst your seams,
as you follow your dreams.
i wish You all will soar to success.

reaching all the Kids today takes everything you’ve got
a worthy challenge I won’t give up on; I give it my best shot
I believe in You, the future.

Poem #9, NaPoWriMo, "I wasn't worried about you, should I be?"

There are those days when you're just driven to daytime drinking...
You know those days, right?
It's worse when there is actually no drink to be drank;
When things go flying before you can even catch your breath;
You get beat upon by life and also fists;
Your best bud is mad at you;
You got assignments due at school
and two jobs to boot;
You gotta make time for the dentist to do his business.
(I'll have you all know - contrary to popular belief, I do not have a big mouth-
and so it really hurts afterwards, what with the fibro and all!)
My hair is atrocious and requiring attention and care...
You get the picture, I'm sure,
Because I know you feel it, too.

Poem #7, NaPoWriMo

(Original: February 2017/edit: April 9, 2017)

Old and wise, I'm tired of what life brings.
Seen many things, and suffered the stings.

Thoughts bounce back and forth,
Big Bang inside my brain,
A wild whirling crash course,
Exploding inner peace drain.

Wishing for a black hole to open and obliterate my soul.
A bad mood, like a demon-
You must exercise, until it's free, Man!

Poem #6, NaPoWriMo, named Supernatural

Poem #6:
Supernatural

About a week ago,
I heard the angels talking.
Your demon ray-gun bullshit
It doesn't work on me.
It's not your fault.
When god is righteous,
You get the hell out of the way.
You should forgive yourself.
Explaining freedom to angels
Is like explaining poetry to fish.

You are not alone,
Is all I'm trying to say.

I always claimed that my doodling made the hamster in my brain spin the thinking wheel....

9/28/2016

Okay, so maybe it's not an actual hamster in my brain, but it turns out, I wasn't that far off the mark.

When I was a student (let's just say, a while back), I often worried that it didn't look like I was listening to the teacher - because I really didn't look l was listening to the teacher.  My eyes were on my page and I was moving my pens furiously across my page - but, honest, Miss, my EARS were listening and I WAS learning.

Research seems to say so:
Sunni Brown's TED talk
http://sunnibrown.com/doodlerevolution/
Globe & Mail article
Time Magazine article - Doodling helps you pay attention
Oprah.comWhy Doodling Is Important“ I Draw Pictures All Day” by Alma Hoffmann

THIS IS MY FAVOURITE:)...
People who doodle are smart - they pay more attention and remember things better than those who do not doodle. That's the scientific result of a study done by Professor Jackie Andrade, of the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth and published by the magazine Applied Cognitive Psychology. The test also showed that fidgeting has the same positive effect. So the next time you're doodling during a meeting — or twirling a pencil or playing with your hair in class and you hear the teacher ask "Are you paying attention," you can say in truth that you have heard every word! Hear the sounds of nature along Spencer Creek... What can you hear? What can you see? Or, simply relax and follow the little yellow ball. Taking some time to just chill out is really good for you says all sorts of research out there (just Google it, if you don't believe me!).

A Walk through Town and Forest...

One day I took a walk in #OurValleyTown, Dundas, Ontario.  Of all the places, it is my favourite.

My Unstructured NAPOWRIMO, Summer 2016
Because I don't do well with structure when it comes to my creativity...
When the poems are ready,
they emerge.
Like the oven timer,
They tell me they're ready.
But if I don't listen,
They're all burnt up
Gone.
Thoughts and words turn to snot that I sneeze away.
On the Marriage of Photography and Poetry...

Meanings in the pictures.
Meanings in the words.
Together they are better.
The meanings are endless;
The possibilities limitless.
Picture poems and poem pictures.
Worth more than a thousand words.
